Born on 3 March 1987, Muniba Mazari Baloch is a Pakistani activist, model, singer, and motivational speaker. She became the National Ambassador for UN Women Pakistan after being shortlisted in 100 Inspirational Women in 2015. She also made it to the Forbes 30 for 2016. Baloch is the first Pakistan Model and Anchor who uses a wheelchair due to injuries sustained in a car accident at the age of 21.

After that accident, she was just left bound to a wheelchair due to her spinal cord injury. While laying on the bed of the hospital with a broken body, barely able to move their hands and half-paralyzed, she began to paint to distract from the dangerous incident. She considers her pain beautiful as it allows her to connect to others’ pain. Despite the pain that she was facing, she painted as she felt that painting was the only thing that kept her alive.

This life-changing experience of Baloch has turned her into an activist, encouraging women who have faced any type of discrimination or violence. She also supports the well-being of underprivileged children and also takes proper care of their education.

Muniba Mazari is from a Baloch background that’s the tribe of Mazari. She was born in Southern Punjab on 3 March 1987 and went to Army Public School for her initial education. Later she attended college in her native hometown for a BFA. When she completed her studies, at the age of 18 she was married to her better half.

But in 2008, a tragic incident took place which left her paraplegic. She came to the eyes of people due to her motivational speech at the TEDx event in Islamabad. Her speech contained a message of hope and urged people not to give up on their lives. This appeal of hers transcends to different generations and represents the voice of women and men across Pakistan. She represents the important social issues of gender inequality and discrimination.

Muniba Mazari has gained fame in multiple areas such as –

  • Being a motivational speaker as well

However, most of her career has been built on painting and motivational speaking. In her painting career, she found a job working for Areeb Azhar Facebook page for some monthly wages.

Then she started to work at her son’s school for a startup project “Dheere Bolo” in which she was asked to teach Urdu at various schools. Pakistan Television’s managing director, Moh Malik learned about her at the time because of her TED talk and he asked her to work at PTV. In 2014, she also worked for Clown Town which allowed her to work with children and elder ones. Apart from this, she was chosen as the Pond’s Miracle woman by Pond’s and also by Toni & Guy, an international hairdressing salon. Hence, she was the first-ever wheelchair-using beautiful model in Asia. “Women of Substance” was her first campaign for them that became very popular.

To spread the feeling of patriotism and unity in Pakistan, she has been a part of “Dil Say Pakistan’s campaign” too. In t, hat campaign she has also performed a song as a singer for them which was published on YouTube in August 2017 – as part of their independence day campaign. In June 2019, Muniba was appointed to be a part of first-ever National Youth Council by Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

She first presented her work in a six-day exhibition held in Lahore.

She has also presented her work in an International exhibition that was held in Dubai.

Apart from this, she has also displayed her art in several other exhibitions such as – Nomad AUSAallery, U, SEA Art Club, and many more.

Muniba as a Motivational Speaker

She has participated in various fronts as a motivational speaker, TED Talks in Islamabad, being her first break being.

Some of her notable works as a motivational speaker are- Vcon Dubai, Entrepreneur’s Organization Network, Pakistan, and many more.

Accident and Recovery

In February 2008, Baloch along with her husband was traveling to Rahim Yar Khan. That was the unlucky time when their car met with an accident and she sustained several major injuries. Broken bones in her arm, rob-cage, spine, collarbone, shoulder blade, lungs, and liver were also deeply cut as well as her entire lower body was left paralyzed.

She was immediately taken to the nearby hospital. Unfortunately, that hospital was ill-equipped to deal with such a severe case, then she was moved to a hospital in Rahim Yar Khan and was then admitted to Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi. Her surgery took place after which she was left bedridden for two years. Then after her physiotherapy started which helped her recover enough to use a wheelchair. She was unable to breathe, and this injury changed her life completely as three vertebrae of her backbone were completely crushed and she became paralyzed for the rest of her life. At that time, she forced herself to smile a little bit.

She cannot bear to see her mother and brothers cry but it was so hard for her to hide the pain. That day itself she decided that she is going to live her life for herself and she doesn’t want to be a perfect person for anyone. She will make herself perfect in her eyes and that’s enough for her. When her treatment was over, she moved to Rawalpindi and in 2011, i.e, four years after her accident, she adopted her beloved son, Nael.

As Muniba is befitted with an iron in her body she was popularly known as the “Iron lady of Pakistan” and is truly loved by everyone.
