The Difference Between Impulse And Reaction Turbine

In this blog we are going to tell you about The Difference Between Impulse And Reaction Turbine, so read this blog carefully to get the complete information.

The difference between impulse and reaction turbines is commonly how the potential form of energy is transformed to rotate the turbine wheel. A functioning fluid holds potential energy as a pressure head and kinetic energy as a velocity head. The fluid can be compressible or incompressible. Impulse and reaction turbines operate various physical principles to utilize this energy.

The main difference between an impulse and a reaction turbine is that in an impulse turbine, steam departs via the nozzle, but in a reaction turbine, steam passes through the guiding tool before departing through the rotating blades. Both impulse and reaction turbines are important in the industrial tools category. There are several Impulse and Reaction Turbines for Sale on Linquip from a capacity of merchants and firms, as well as different Manufacturers and Distributors.

Impulse Turbine:

Impulse turbines are mostly used in a very high head applications. This turbine functions at atmospheric pressure. The impulse turbine transforms the speed of the water jet. The jet intrudes on the turbine’s angled blade which reverses the direction of the flow. The resulting change in momentum (impulse) results in pressure on the turbine blades.

Since the turbine is rotating, the force acts through a distance (work), and the diverted water flow is departed with diminished energy.

The water pressure (potential energy) is converted to kinetic energy through a nozzle and focused on the turbine before striking the turbine blades.

No pressure transitions happen at the turbine blades, and the turbine doesn’t need lodging for operation.

The transfer of energy for an impulse turbine is defined by Newton’s second law.

Reaction Turbine:

Reaction turbines are operated by water which transitions pressure as it moves through the turbine and gives up its energy. They must be clad to comprise the water pressure (or suction), and they must be entirely immersed in the water flow.

A reaction turbine is used by many water turbines. The transfer of energy for the reaction turbine is described by Newton’s third law

Distinction Between Impulse And Reaction Turbine

  • The steam flows through the nozzle and hits the moving blades in an impulse turbine whereas, In the reaction turbine steam instead flows through the guide mechanism and then streams through the moving blades.
  • In an impulse turbine, steam crosses the moving blades with kinetic energy only. But in the reaction turbine, the stream which flows over the moving blades contains both pressure and kinetic energy.
  • In an impulse turbine, through the moving blades, the pressure of steam remains constant during its flow. But in a reaction turbine, through the moving blades, the pressure of steam reduces during its flow.
  • In an impulse turbine, the steam may or may not be divulged to the entire circumference. In a reaction turbine, the steam must be divulged to the entire circumference.
  • The reaction turbine is not symmetrical but the blades of the impulse turbine are symmetrical.
  • The proximate velocity of steam in the impulse turbine remains constant but in the Reaction turbine, it increases while sliding over the blades.
  • For the same energy evolution, the number of stages required is more in a reaction turbine as compared to an impulse turbine.
  • The steam flow in a reaction turbine is radial and axial to the turbine rotation but in the impulse turbine, steam flow is radial to the turbine rotation.
  • Considering the maintenance work, the reaction turbine has more maintenance work as compared with the impulse turbine.
  • Where discharge is low, an impulse turbine is applicable and the reaction turbine is suitable for medium and high release.
